The musculos escalenos are a group of three muscles located in the lateral aspect of the neck. These muscles are named as anterior, middle, and posterior scalene muscles. The scalene muscles act as accessory muscles of respiration, assisting in inhaling air into the lungs by elevating the ribs and sternum. These muscles are also involved in flexing and rotating the neck and providing stability to the cervical spine.
The scalene muscles originate from the transverse processes of the cervical vertebrae and insert on the first and second ribs. These muscles are innervated by the cervical nerves, specifically the anterior rami of C2-C7 spinal nerves.
Overuse or strain of the scalene muscles can lead to pain and discomfort in the neck and shoulders. Tightness in the scalene muscles can also cause compression of the nerves of the brachial plexus, resulting in symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome. Stretching, massage, and strengthening exercises can help relieve tension in the scalene muscles and improve neck mobility.
